Some people have asked me just why I started doing this and who I got the idea from. Well I started just after I left the University of Glasgow with just a simple website with only a few pages, and I put some Google Adsense adverts on it. A short while later the cents were rolling in. At that time Google paid UK advertisers in US Dollars. It was at this point I thought, hang on, I have a day job, and I’m making money from the internet. Two income streams are better than one, even if you end up having to pay the HMRC tax on it at the end of the year. Many people forget about that! But the Tax Man is still due his share if you get paid from the internet, and in the long run its better to do it by the book, rather than end up a few years down the line and getting caught out, which can lead to hefty fines and imprisonment is also a possibility!
So with this thought in mind, about increasing my second income, I scoured the internet for people with similar ambition. I found them, Tyler Cruz, John Chow, Zac Johnson and the guy that made “retireat21.com”. What a thought! Imagine being able to “retire” from your day job and be your own boss, making your own money, it is hard though, no doubt about it. Just with any other business venture most people will fail not long after start-up… Here’s some pretty pictures to see if they inspire you!
What more inspiration do you need? These guys earn proper amounts of money, but also and more importantly put in the proper amount / quality of work needed to achieve their goals. They know their stuff, the set a goal and work until they can get it. I still consider myself a beginner at making money online, but these guys continue to inspire, not just me, but hundreds of thousands of other people with similar ambitions to make a living from the web.
Back to the story now… After a few years I was doing ok, I made enough to pay my rent each month, but then things started to slide and I couldn’t figure out why so I just let it slide, to the point where there was 12 months I didn’t get paid at all. I was still accumulating income, but it was so little that I didn’t even reach Google Adsense’s minimum payout of £60, and Ebaypartnernetwork (EPN) had started paying me £0.00 per click. That hurt. Especially when I thought I’ll just get a decent paid full-time job instead and that will be me, but of course the way the economy went at that time full time jobs were harder to find than nuggets of gold in your local stream!
After two years of searching I finally got a full-time job, and now after coming across Tyler Cruz and John Chow’s blogs again, I now have a renewed inspiration to give this another go. I will make a profit from affiliate marketing and online advertising, might take a while, but I will.
I’m not setting out on this path again with a dream of earning millions, but if I could earn just enough so that I didn’t have to worry about money, and it allowed me to do all this things I want to do then I’d be a very, very chuffed chap! So lets do this!!!
